Summary of 1 Kings Chapter 1
King David was now old and weak. Although he was still king, he was nearing the end of his life. During this time, one of his sons, Adonijah, decided to make himself king without God’s approval or King David’s permission.
Adonijah gathered important people around him, including Joab, the commander of the army, and Abiathar the priest. They supported his plan and even held a celebration to announce him as king. However, they deliberately left out Solomon, Nathan the prophet, Zadok the priest, Benaiah, and David’s loyal servants because they knew they would not support this rebellion.
Nathan the prophet learned about Adonijah’s actions and immediately informed Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. Together they went to King David and reminded him of his promise that Solomon would become king after him.
King David acted quickly. He publicly declared Solomon as the rightful king of Israel. Solomon was anointed by Zadok the priest, and the people celebrated with great joy.
When Adonijah and his supporters heard the celebrations, they became afraid and scattered. Adonijah fled to the altar and held onto its horns, seeking mercy.
Instead of executing him immediately, Solomon showed mercy. He told Adonijah that if he proved himself to be faithful, he would live. However, if he chose wickedness, he would face the consequences.
What We Learn from 1 Kings Chapter 1
1. God’s Plans Cannot Be Stopped
Adonijah believed he could become king simply because he wanted the position. But God had already chosen Solomon.
No matter how powerful people may seem, God’s purpose will always prevail.
Lesson:
When God has a plan for your life, no one can stop it.
Isaiah 46:10
“My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.”
2. Pride Leads to Destruction
Adonijah promoted himself instead of waiting for God’s timing.
He surrounded himself with people who agreed with him instead of seeking God’s direction.
Pride often causes people to believe they know better than God.
Lesson:
Never promote yourself ahead of God’s timing.
God opens doors that no one can close.
3. Wise Counsel Is a Blessing
Nathan the prophet did not ignore what was happening.
He wisely approached Bathsheba, and together they brought the matter before King David.
Because they acted wisely, God’s plan was protected.
Lesson:
God often uses wise, godly people to guide us.
Listen to spiritual leaders who speak according to God’s Word.
4. Godly Leadership Requires Action
David was old, but he did not ignore the problem.
He acted immediately to establish God’s chosen king.
Good leaders deal with problems instead of avoiding them.
Lesson:
Leadership requires courage, wisdom, and obedience.
5. Mercy Is Greater Than Revenge
Solomon had every reason to punish Adonijah immediately.
Instead, he showed mercy and gave him an opportunity to change.
This reflects God’s own mercy toward us.
God gives us opportunities to repent before judgment comes.
Lesson:
As Christians, we should choose forgiveness and mercy whenever possible.

- Am I trying to force doors open instead of waiting on God’s timing?
- Do I seek God’s will before making important decisions?
- Am I surrounded by wise, godly counsel?
- Do I trust God’s plan even when I don’t understand it?
- Do I show mercy to others the way God has shown mercy to me?

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding us that Your plans are perfect and cannot be stopped. Help us to trust Your timing instead of trying to make things happen in our own strength. Give us humble hearts that seek Your will above our own desires.
Surround us with wise people who will encourage us to follow You faithfully. Teach us to lead with integrity, act with courage, and show mercy to others just as You have shown mercy to us.
May our lives always reflect obedience to Your Word and confidence in Your promises.
