After King Solomon established his kingdom, Hiram, the king of Tyre, sent messengers to congratulate him because he had been a close friend of King David.
Solomon told Hiram about his desire to build a temple for the Lord. He explained that although David had wanted to build it, God had not allowed him because of the many wars he had fought. Now that Israel was living in peace, Solomon believed the time had come to fulfill God’s promise.
Hiram gladly agreed to help. He supplied cedar and cypress timber from Lebanon, while Solomon agreed to provide food for Hiram’s household as payment.
The two kings formed a peaceful partnership based on mutual respect and honesty.
Solomon also organized thousands of workers to cut timber, prepare stones, and transport materials. Skilled craftsmen carefully shaped each stone before it reached the building site.
The chapter ends with the workers preparing everything needed to build the Temple of the Lord.
What We Learn from 1 Kings Chapter 5
1. God’s Timing Is Perfect
David desired to build the Temple, but it was not God’s timing.
That responsibility was given to Solomon.
Sometimes God says, “Not now,” not because He has rejected us, but because He has appointed the right season.
Lesson:
Trust God’s timing.
If a door has not opened yet, God may still be preparing you.
Ecclesiastes 3:1
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
2. Preparation Comes Before Great Things
Before a single stone was placed, Solomon spent time planning.
Workers were organized.
Materials were gathered.
Partnerships were established.
Preparation was just as important as the construction itself.

God often prepares us before He promotes us.
Don’t despise seasons of preparation.
They are part of His purpose.
3. God Uses People to Accomplish His Work
Solomon could not build the Temple alone.
He needed skilled workers.
He needed Hiram.
He needed builders, stonecutters, and craftsmen.
God’s work is accomplished through people working together.

Value teamwork, unity, and faithful partnerships.
4. Keep Your Promises
Both Solomon and Hiram honored their agreement.
Each fulfilled their responsibilities faithfully.
Their partnership succeeded because it was built on trust.

As Christians, our word should be trustworthy.
When we make a commitment, we should honor it.

5. Excellence Glorifies God
The builders carefully prepared every stone before construction began.
Nothing was rushed.
Nothing was careless.
They wanted the Temple to honor God.

Whatever we do for God deserves our very best.
Whether serving in church, working at your job, studying, or caring for your family, do it with excellence.
6. We Are Also Building God’s House
Today, God no longer lives in a physical temple made by human hands.
Through Christ, believers have become God’s temple.
Our lives are the place where God chooses to dwell.
Every day, God is shaping us, just as the builders shaped the stones for His Temple.

Sometimes His work is uncomfortable, but He is preparing you for His purpose.

One detail in this chapter is easy to overlook:
The stones for the Temple were cut and shaped before they reached the building site (1 Kings 5:17–18; this preparation continues into the building account).
In the same way, God often shapes us in private before He uses us publicly.
The difficult seasons, the waiting, the lessons we learn, and the challenges we face are not wasted. God is preparing us to become the people He has called us to be.
