The Book of 1 Kings 13

Chapter 13 – Obey God's Word Completely

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
– James 1:22 (ESV)

Summary of 1 Kings Chapter 13

While King Jeroboam was offering sacrifices at the altar in Bethel, a man of God from Judah arrived with a message from the Lord.

He boldly prophesied against the altar, declaring that one day a king named Josiah would destroy it and remove the false worship taking place there. As a sign that the prophecy was from God, he said the altar would split apart and its ashes would be poured out.

When Jeroboam became angry and pointed at the man of God, ordering his arrest, his hand suddenly became shriveled, and he could not pull it back. At that very moment, the altar split apart just as God had said.

Realizing God’s power, Jeroboam pleaded with the man of God to pray for him. The man prayed, and God restored the king’s hand.

Jeroboam then invited the man of God to come home with him for food and a reward. But the man refused because God had clearly commanded him:

  • Do not eat bread.
  • Do not drink water.
  • Do not return by the same road.

He obeyed God’s instruction and left by another route.

Later, an old prophet from Bethel heard what had happened and went after the man of God. He invited him to his home for a meal.

The man of God explained that God had forbidden him from eating or drinking there.

The old prophet then lied, saying:

“An angel spoke to me and told me to bring you back.”

Believing the old prophet instead of God’s clear command, the man of God returned with him and ate.

While they were eating, God spoke through the old prophet, announcing judgment because the man of God had disobeyed His command.

As the man of God continued his journey home, a lion attacked and killed him.

Remarkably, the lion did not eat the body or attack the donkey. Both stood beside the body, showing that this was an act of God’s judgment rather than a normal animal attack.

The old prophet mourned the man of God and buried him with honor.

Despite witnessing these miraculous events, Jeroboam still refused to repent and continued leading Israel into idolatry.

What We Learn from 1 Kings Chapter 13

1. God’s Word Must Be Our Final Authority

The man of God received a clear command directly from God.

Later, he accepted a different message simply because someone claimed it came from an angel.

He should have obeyed what God had already said.

Lesson:

Never allow anyone to persuade you to disobey God’s clear Word.

Every message, teaching, or prophecy must agree with Scripture.

Galatians 1:8

“Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!”

2. Partial Obedience Is Still Disobedience

The man of God obeyed many instructions.

He delivered God’s message.

He refused the king’s reward.

He left by another road.

But in the end, he disobeyed one command.

God takes obedience seriously.

Lesson:

Faithfulness means obeying God completely—not only when it is convenient.

3. Spiritual Discernment Is Essential

The old prophet sounded convincing.

He claimed divine authority.

Yet he spoke falsely.

Not everyone who claims to speak for God actually speaks His truth.

Jesus Himself warned about false prophets.

Lesson:

Test every message against God’s Word.

Pray for discernment.

1 John 4:1

“Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits.”

4. Miracles Alone Do Not Change Hearts

Jeroboam witnessed incredible miracles.

His hand was healed.

The altar split apart.

Yet he refused to repent.

Miracles may amaze people, but only a surrendered heart is transformed.

Lesson:

Seek a changed heart more than extraordinary experiences.

5. God Desires Repentance

Even after Jeroboam’s hand was restored, he continued in sin.

God’s kindness was meant to lead him to repentance, but he rejected it.

Lesson:

When God corrects us or shows us mercy, respond with repentance and renewed obedience.

6. Finish the Journey Faithfully

The man of God began courageously.

He spoke God’s truth without fear.

But he failed near the end of his assignment.

Our goal is not only to start well but also to finish well.

Lesson:

Stay faithful to God from beginning to end.

Life Application

Ask yourself:

  • Am I obeying God’s Word completely?
  • Do I compare every teaching with Scripture?
  • Am I easily influenced by opinions that contradict God’s truth?
  • Has God been calling me to obey in an area where I have delayed?
  • Am I committed to finishing my walk with Christ faithfully?

Memory Verse

James 1:22

“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
