Summary of 1 Kings Chapter 3
After becoming king, Solomon strengthened his kingdom and married the daughter of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Although Solomon loved the Lord and walked in the ways of his father David, the people were still worshipping at the high places because the temple had not yet been built.
One night, while Solomon was worshipping the Lord at Gibeon, God appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Ask for whatever you want Me to give you.”
Instead of asking for wealth, a long life, or victory over his enemies, Solomon asked God for an understanding heart so that he could govern God’s people with wisdom and discern between right and wrong.
God was pleased with Solomon’s request. Because Solomon had asked for wisdom instead of selfish gain, God promised to give him not only wisdom but also riches, honor, and, if he remained obedient, a long life.
Soon after, two women came before Solomon. Both claimed to be the mother of the same baby. There was no witness to prove who the real mother was.
Solomon proposed that the baby be divided in two. The true mother immediately begged the king to give the baby to the other woman rather than harm the child. The other woman agreed to divide the baby.
Solomon then knew who the real mother was because genuine love always protects life. He gave the baby to the true mother.
The people were amazed because they recognized that God had given Solomon extraordinary wisdom.
What We Learn from 1 Kings Chapter 3
1. God Wants Us to Ask Him
God invited Solomon to ask for anything.
This teaches us that God delights in hearing our prayers. He wants us to bring our needs, dreams, and concerns to Him.

Never hesitate to pray. God is interested in every area of your life.

2. Wisdom Is Better Than Wealth
Most people would have asked for money, success, or power.
Solomon asked for wisdom because he wanted to serve God’s people well.
God honored that choice.
Lesson:
The greatest blessing is not having more possessions—it is having God’s wisdom to make the right decisions.
3. God Blesses Selfless Hearts
Solomon’s request was not centered on himself.
He wanted to serve others faithfully.
God loves hearts that seek His Kingdom before personal gain.

When our desires align with God’s purpose, He often blesses us beyond what we ask.

4. Wisdom Helps Us Make Difficult Decisions
The case of the two mothers seemed impossible.
There was no evidence.
No witnesses.
Only one baby.
Yet God’s wisdom revealed the truth.
Lesson:
Human intelligence has limits, but God’s wisdom brings clarity when situations seem impossible.
Before making difficult decisions, ask God for wisdom.
5. True Love Is Willing to Sacrifice
The real mother would rather lose her child than see him harmed.
Her love exposed the truth.
This reminds us of God’s love for us.
Jesus willingly sacrificed Himself so that we could have life.

Real love seeks the good of others, even when it requires personal sacrifice.
6. A Good Reputation Comes from God’s Wisdom
The people respected Solomon because they saw God’s wisdom at work.
People notice when we live according to God’s wisdom.
Our decisions, integrity, and character become a testimony to His goodness.

Live wisely so that your life brings glory to God.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being a generous God who gives wisdom to those who ask. Like Solomon, we ask for understanding hearts so that we may make decisions that honor You and bless others.
Help us to seek Your Kingdom above our own desires. Give us discernment to know right from wrong, courage to follow Your truth, and humility to depend on You every day.
May our lives reflect Your wisdom so that others may see Your goodness through us.
