Written by Chapter 2 – David's Final Instructions and Solomon Establishes His Kingdom

Summary of 1 Kings Chapter 2
As King David’s life came to an end, he called his son Solomon and gave him his final instructions.
David encouraged Solomon to be strong, courageous, and above all, to remain faithful to God. He reminded Solomon that true success would come through obedience to God’s commands, not merely through military strength or political influence.
David also instructed Solomon to deal wisely with certain people. He reminded him of Joab’s violent actions and advised him to hold Joab accountable. At the same time, he told Solomon to show kindness to the family of Barzillai because they had faithfully supported David during difficult times. He also reminded Solomon about Shimei, who had cursed him during Absalom’s rebellion, and urged Solomon to handle that matter with wisdom.
After David died, Solomon became king.
Soon afterward, Adonijah approached Bathsheba with what seemed like a simple request. He asked to marry Abishag, the young woman who had cared for King David. In those days, marrying a former king’s concubine or attendant was often seen as a claim to the throne. Solomon understood that Adonijah’s request was another attempt to gain power, so he acted decisively and had Adonijah put to death.
Abiathar the priest, who had supported Adonijah, was removed from the priesthood but spared because of his previous service to David.
Joab fled to the altar, hoping to avoid punishment, but Solomon carried out justice because of Joab’s history of murder.
Shimei was given mercy and allowed to live under one condition: he was not to leave Jerusalem. After three years, Shimei disobeyed the king’s command. As a result, Solomon enforced the consequences that had been clearly explained to him.
The chapter ends by saying:
“The kingdom was now established in Solomon’s hands.” (1 Kings 2:46)
What We Learn from 1 Kings Chapter 2
1. Finish Well
David knew his time on earth was ending. Instead of focusing on himself, he focused on preparing the next generation.
He wanted Solomon to succeed spiritually before succeeding politically.
Lesson:
A godly legacy is one of the greatest gifts we can leave behind.
Our final words and our example should point others toward God.
2 Timothy 4:7
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
2. Obedience Brings Success
David reminded Solomon that success depends on obedience to God’s Word.
Many people measure success by money, popularity, or influence.
God measures success by faithfulness.
Lesson:
When we obey God, we place ourselves in the path of His blessing and guidance.
3. Godly Leaders Must Be Wise
Solomon faced difficult decisions almost immediately after becoming king.
He had to balance mercy with justice.
Good leadership requires wisdom, courage, and discernment.
Lesson:
Pray for wisdom before making important decisions.
Not every situation has an easy answer, but God promises to guide those who seek Him.
4. Our Choices Have Consequences
Adonijah ignored God’s plan.
Joab refused to repent for his violence.
Shimei broke the agreement he had willingly accepted.
Each person experienced the consequences of their own decisions.
Lesson:
God is merciful, but He also calls us to live responsibly and keep our commitments.
5. Mercy Does Not Cancel Responsibility
Solomon showed mercy before taking action.
Adonijah had been spared once.
Shimei had been given a clear warning.
Both were given opportunities to live differently.
When they rejected those opportunities, they faced the consequences.
Lesson:
God is patient and gracious, giving us opportunities to repent. His mercy invites us to change our hearts, not to continue in disobedience.
6. God’s Promises Continue Through Generations
David’s life ended, but God’s plan did not.
The promise God made to David continued through Solomon.
People come and go, but God’s purposes remain.
Lesson:
God’s work is bigger than any one person. We each have a role in His ongoing plan.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the wisdom found in Your Word. Help us to finish our race faithfully, just as David encouraged Solomon to walk in obedience. Give us wisdom to make decisions that honor You and courage to do what is right, even when it is difficult.
Teach us to value obedience more than success, faithfulness more than recognition, and Your will above our own desires.
May the legacy we leave behind point others to Jesus Christ.
